The story of the mural
In Saint-Pierre, in the amphitheatre of the Earth Science Discovery Centre, a circular work by Martinican artist Klélo, read from left to right as three landscapes: past, present, future.
A conch shell rises from the sea, the original breath of life; then the shock of colonisation, as broken islets floating in the air. At the foot of the volcano (Mount Pelée) under a full moon, bèlè dancers and the drum, painted at the heart of the earth; red roots like magma carry the memory linking Africa and the Caribbean. Finally the sun sets behind a resting creature that merges with land and sky.

The artist
Klēlo
An interdisciplinary artist, Klēlo explores how information and energy circulate and interconnect. The places, real or imaginary, that she shapes can either enliven us… or petrify us.
