The story of the mural

On the façade of the former girls' school in Terres-Sainville, three portraits of women: Les Fortes de France (“the strong women of France”, a play on Fort-de-France), by Guadeloupean artist Carole B.

The format is the Marianne postage stamp: instead of the imaginary symbol of the Republic, real women. Left, Marie-José Pérec (sport); centre, Gerty Archimède, the first Black woman lawyer in France (law and politics); right, Jocelyne Béroard of Kassav' (music).

Each portrait is made with about ten hand-cut stencils, one per colour, and carries its own motto, such as “Liberty, Equality, Créolité” for Jocelyne Béroard.
