The story of the mural
This mural, now gone, was painted in 2024 by Martinican artist Socabohm on the theme of fire. Its title, “Bwa Brilé”, refers to Eugène Mona's famous song and to the 2024 protests against the high cost of living, which deeply marked the neighbourhood.
Working from archive images, he painted a great fire at the centre, women dancing around it, and figures of Martinican culture: musicians, a cane cutter, a young flag bearer, a water carrier. He sketched it in charcoal tied to a pole, then used sober colours: earthy brown on black, dotted with white sparks like a starry sky.
The figures had no faces, as works with faces were often damaged at the time; for Socabohm this erasure echoed the loss of memory. Keeping the fire alive means keeping Martinican identity alive.

The artist
Socabohm
Selected by the ARTMADA #1 jury, Socabohm questions and celebrates our visual heritage: the images we have created and those that were created of us. During the festival he also took a middle-school class on a sketch tour of Fort-de-France.
