The story of the mural
Canal Alaric is a quiet corner of a working-class area where boats moor along the canal; nearly half of its residents have immigrant roots, mostly Haitian. So Haitian artist Rayza, a major figure of contemporary Haitian graffiti (Festi Graffiti collective), was invited here.
He painted a Madan Sara, the travelling market woman who carries the Caribbean economy on her head: in profile, a sky-blue tub of sugar cane and goods on her head, eyes lowered, a resilient smile. It is also a tribute to his own mother, a market trader. Pink softens the scene; a hyperrealistic face in the tub holds your gaze. His largest wall to date, “to share love and give back hope”.
