The story of the mural
Veneno is a French artist who came out of graffiti and has been painting for over twenty years, known for large black-and-white murals of hyenas, hooded figures and vandals. For ARTMADA she stepped away from her usual style and brought colour back in.
At the centre, in black and white, is Martinique's endemic iguana. Below it, in colour, a white pitaya cut in half: the dragon fruit. A deep blue background covers the rest of the wall.
Her precise line and strong contrasts come from linocut and woodcut printmaking, which she studied for three years in Mexico.
Her take on the “Lyannaj Karayib” theme is a duality: a species deeply rooted in the island, next to a fruit from Asia that was brought here and adapted. It echoes Martinique's history of migration, forced displacement and mixing, and questions identity, adaptation and creolisation.

The artist
Veneno
An urban artist from Nantes, Veneno builds a powerful graphic universe that blends graffiti and printmaking in stark black and white. Hooded figures and humanised animals explore the duality of gentleness and violence.
